School Statement

HISTORY: Founded in the 17th Century at Ypres, Belgium, as an all-girls, Benedictine school under the direction of the "Irish Dames of Ypres". On fleeing the German invasion of Ypres, the nuns took refuge at Olton Abbey, Staffordshire, England. They returned to Ireland, County Wexford in 1918. In 1920 they arrived at Kylemore Castle, Connemara, County Galway. There the nuns resumed a boarding and day school and this has continued ever since. CHARACTERISTICS: All -girls, integrated relationally with the Benedictine Community and lay staff in an atmosphere of trust.
