School Statement

The school in its present form was established on imperial decree in 1807. The monastery - founded in 1155 by Henry II Babenberg with the help of Irish monks from S. Jacob, Ratisbon in Bavaria - had always entertained some sort of educational institution, from a 'Latin school' in the middle ages to a secondary school for the sons of Vienna's nobility in the 18th century. While the chief aim of our academic training is to provide the widest possible general knowledge, particular emphasis has always been laid on classical and foreign languages. One of the characteristics of our school is its unique location within the boundaries of the Schotten Monastery in the heart of Vienna. It provides an atmosphere of peace and quiet in the midst of all the challenges and distractions of urban life. Another characteristic ids the high number of Schotten Alumni taking a university degree (more than 90%).
