| Egbert-Gymnasium has a long tradition and has its roots in a boarding school for boys who wanted to become monks, especially in pre-World War II times. It was then located 20 kms away from the present site, in St. Ludwig. The new boarding school and Gymnasium was built right next to the Abbey in Münsterschwarzach in the 1960's, for up to 120 students. The next important step was made when the Convent decided to enable the pupils to stay for 'Abitur', which happened in the early 1980's. Together with this important step the school gave itself a particular profile. It is based on the Christian idea of a human being and aims at an education that involves all aspects of a human being. It concentrates on additional obligatory lessons in 'dramatic activities', basic knowledge in cooking and woodwork, and offers special music groups, such as school orchestra or school bands, and various team and individual sports, e.g. basketball, volleyball, gymnastics and "Voltigieren" (gymnastics on horseback). Various additional religious options and activities try to keep the specific identity of our Benedictine school. With the end of the school year 1998/99 our boarding school was closed. The day school, which was restricted to classes 5 & ^, can now be enlarged for pupils up to class 10. | |||
