School Statement | |||
| The school was opened in 1905 as a boarding school for boys in order to meet the chronic need for education for Catholic boys. It has remained substantially the same in character with the original enrolment of 240 rising to 310 in recent years with the students coming from all parts of the Irish Republic and few from abroad, apart from Irish expatriates. From the beginning most of the teaching staff were lay because the monks were not allowed to attend university after enteringn the community. There were usually 10-12 monks working in the school - now reduced to 5. It is currently highly academic with 95% of students proceeding to 3rd level studies. Because of the homogeneous nature of the enrolment it is tightly knit school community with a strong Catholic ethos. Main sports are rugby, hurling and athletics played at a comparatively high level. Cultural activities include annual operetta, plays, music ensembles and art exhibitions. There is a strong emphasis on public speaking, both Irish and English. The school has recently embarked on a major building programme. £ 3.5 million has been spent in the past 4 years. | |||
