HISTORY OF IMMACULATE CONCEIÇÃO INSTITUTE I

It was in 1920 that the first sisters, sent for the Priorate of Saint Scholastic - Sorocaba, founded the “Immaculate Conceição Institute”, in Itapetininga. Some of these sisters had initiated on January 15th,1920 a Catholic School with Elementary education.
It started its activities in a small building on Quintino Bocaiúva Street, where there is a parking lot nowadays. The known “Nuns' college” taught several courses. On May 1st, 1921, due to the lack of place, the sisters rented a second house close to the first one, to where the school was moved, the kindergarten, the painting studio and the musical conservatory. In 1923, once again it was necessary to find a new place. So, the Immaculate Conceição Institute surpassed its difficulties, overtaking a lot of problems, even transformed itself in an improvised Military Hospital from 1930 to 1932. It offered a good service and a spiritual recuperation to several wounded soldiers.
In 1997, the Institute had received students from Nursery School, Elementary Education and Secondary Education, working for 77 years for the community.
Nowadays, the Missionary Benedictines sisters of Tutzing, who have been in Brazil since 1903, do this job supported by the Scriptures and Saint Benedict's Rule, living the Mission Ideal, Prayer and Community Life, integrating this ideal to their children and teens' education.
The Institute and its teachers, as assistant agent of the Educative Process, will never lose of sight the objective of providing to each student total education, thinking about people's valuation with God, with themselves and with the other, intending to live in a process of Liberating-Evangelic Education.
