School Statement | |||
| On February 2, 1955, the Missionary Benedictine Nuns of Tutzing, Priory of Olinda, opened a school in Bairro Novo, a new part of town of fast growing Olinda. The first headmistress was Sr. Edmunda Montenegro OSB. At first the sisters daily went from their priory to give lessons in this part of town. Some years later a convent was added to the school. In 2002 children from two to six were educated in the school, and seven- to fourteen-year-olds received primary education. In 2003 a secondary school preparing for university is being started for fifteen- to eighteen-year-olds. Since 2000 there has been a course of philosophy for children for the little ones up to their fourth school year. From 2003 there will be English lessons already from the first school year. For the six- to fourteen-year-olds, there is also a group from the Children's Missionary Work. The four schools of the Missionary Benedictine Nuns in the northeast of Brazil cooperate well: There are meetings of the headmistresses, and the teachers of religious education, and there are competitions for the students. For the teaching staff there are days of recollection aimed at intensifying Benedictine spirituality. Around March 21, in the course of a "Benedict's week", students are introduced into S. Benedict and quotes from his rule. | |||
