School Statement

We strive to impart Benedictine spirituality to our students. It all started with Dom Osvaldo Brasileiro, a parish priest, who travelled to Olinda in 1920 prompting Sr. Ermentrudis Hellmann OSB, prioress at that time, to found a school for the education of girls in the inland of Pernambuco. Already in the selfsame year of 1920, the first four Missionary Benedictine Nuns went to Caruaru. They started with a primary course in former warehouses. Additionally they gave private lessons for painting, drawing and needlework. Soon boarding and extension courses were added. After Vatican Council, boys were taken in as well and the boarding house closed down. Today there are 1267 students (girls and boys) in this school. Courses range from preschool (even infants aged 1 year and 8 months are taken in) to school leaving age (A-levels). Not only do we strive to provide these children and young people with an academic education, but we also try to educate them as responsible citizens and Christians. In addition to Religious Instructions we offer our students days of retreat. Similarly, days of retreat are offered to the staff and parents. There is a group of the Children's Missionary Work. We try to heighten our students' social awareness by paying visits to homes for the aged, day-nurseries, areas of the poor, and institutions for homeless children. In the course of our visits, we present theatre productions and organize leisure-time activities. We participate in projects concerned with justice, peace and the conservation of creation. Our students are members of the middle class and the lower middle class
