School Statement

HISTORY: The monastery was founded in 1120, since when we have always had a small school, comprising some 20 to 30 pupils. In the wake of the monastic closures in several Swiss Cantons and the expulsion of the Jesuits, who had managed a number of schools, in 1851 the monastery decoded to build up its school. By 1863 the school and boarding house buildings were in place, which in 1903 were expanded into the present boarding school. In 1909 the school gained the right to confer 'Maturitat'. A new boarding house was built for the top two years and finally the new school building was erected in 1971.
Engelberg's monastery school is an entirely private school, which is almost exclusively supported by fees from parents. This ensures great freedom in arranging its scholastic and social life. The boarding house is intended to lead the pupils to a community life with a many-sided outlook in both the cultural and sporting spheres. At weekends the pupils remain in the boarding house and take part in the monastic liturgy. There is a three-grade Secondary school alongside the 'Gymnasium'and also a "Handelsmittelschule" (middle school with economical direction) with matura.
FUNDING: The parents of boarding pupils have top pay both the teaching and boarding fees. In the case of Gymnasium' pupils from the Cantons of Obwalden and Nidwalden the Canton pays teaching fees (with a contribution of 500 Swiss Francs p.a. from the parents. Engelberg Town Council pays school fees for Secondary pupils from Engelberg.
